ANIMATED DEBATE - PROJECT

In the workshop season 2003/2004 the Artistic
Association Grodzki Theater began a pilot project entitled "Animated
Debate - computer animation workshops". This two-year
programme sought innovative ways of using ICT in artistic
activities.
The artwork made by the workshop
participants of the six partner groups can be found
in two sections: Animations Studio and Presentations.
Animations Studio
You can find here all
the works made in course of practising drawing, animation
and English language. They document the whole process
of workshop activities - various exercises and assignements
realised on each stage of the project.
Presentations
This is the presentation
of the final workshop results in each of the participating
groups: scenarios, storyboards, animations and films.

The project was selected by the EC as the
only Polish project in the Socrates/Minerva action in 2003.
The success was even greater in view of a tough competition
in that selection year: only 30 projects were chosen from
among 297 proposals submitted by the organizations from all
the countries taking part in the Socrates programme. The
Association was awarded a grant of 210.000 Euro for the Animated
Debate workshops.
The project was run in partnership with
the following organizations:
Instituto
Mediterraneo Ricerca e Comunicazione - Termini Imerese,
Italy (
www isme-rc.org )
WAC
Performing Arts and Media College - London, UK (www.wac.co.uk)
EST Education
Centre - Wadowice, Poland (www.est.iq.pl)
Societate
Romana pentru Educatie Permanenta - Bucharest, Romania (www.srep.ro)
The project target group consisted of young
people with various dysfunctions:
- youth with psychological
and physical disabilities
- adolescents on the edge of social pathology
- victims of addiction
The main objective of the project was to
run computer animation workshops for children and youth aged
10 - 20 from November 2003 to June 2005.
The workshop programme included a wide range of artistic
activities and pursuits. Its main rationale was to enable
each of the participants to find his/her own place in the
workshop team and have a chance to develop his/her individual
artistic talents, passions and needs.
The project was divided into four main modules:
1. Computer workshops - learning and developing
skills of using graphics, animation and word-processing software
as well as the Internet searching and communication skills.
2. Arts workshops. One of the key elements of the programme
was free and individual artistic creativity of the participants
- writing the film scenarios, drawing, elements of theater
and photography.
3. English learning - the workshops gave the students an
opportunity to use English as a means of communication with
their peers in other countries; they learned, developed and
practiced basic language skills in the context of Animated
Debate.
4. Film making - the workshops resulted in the creation of
animated films by each of the groups in close cooperation
with partner groups in the other three countries.
The Association organized three integration
groups, each consisting of 10 - 12 students. Each of the
Polish groups ran an "animated debate" with a peer
group from Britain, Romania and Italy. All Polish groups
had four hours of workshops in a row, once a week. The workshops
were organized in the computer room in the Bielsko Garrison
Club, "Dom Żołnierza" and ran by animation instructors
- Krzysztof Tusiewicz (film director, photographer) and Marek
Luzar (animated film director, painter). Both artists had
a long pedagogical experience. The language course was taught
by Zuzanna Głowacka (English teacher, EST; international
puppet theater festival organizer, Banialuka Theater).
The participation in the workshops was free of charge.
The project was also addressed to educators
and therapists providing care for dysfunctional groups. In
the dissemination campaign they were introduced to new innovative
methods of using ICT in their daily work. For this purpose,
Animated Debate Guide for Educators was published and 10
seminars for teachers from the Malopolska and Silesia region
were organized.
