MACROPRJECT PHARE ACCESS 2000


The Bielsko Artistic Association - Grodzki Theatre received a grant in the MACROPROJECTS PHARE ACCESS 2000 programme. The grant worth 103,000 Euro was devoted to the realization of the programme.

" Theatre and Education. Work for full participation of socially marginal groups in social life".

The Access Programme is the initiative of the European Union aimed at supporting the development of citizen society as well at assistance at the social and economic transformation process in countries-candidates for the European Union. The grant contract was signed on 19 September 2002 and the project was completed in September 2003. Maria Schejbal was the co-ordinator and The Youth Centre "Babilonas" from Vilnius in Lithuania was the partner of the Association in the project.

Target groups of the project:

- individuals at risk - victims of poverty and violence, those deprived of proper parental care, experiencing behavioural problems - children and teenagers;
- victims of addictions - children and teenagers;
- physically and mentally disabled people - children, teenagers and adults
- mentally disabled persons - adults, including senile patients
The project was implemented in 17 centres of specialised care as well as in educational and therapeutical centres in Bielsko-Biała.
An additional target group consisted of teenagers of the Silesian District and the Małopolska District, among whom the brochure published as part of the project was distributed.

Main objectives of the project


The programme consisted of diversified and thorough popularisation of activities implemented together with potentially excluded groups - presentation of their problems, emotions, desires. The subject matter of the programme was to seek and create new ways for the integration of the marginalised groups with society. Specific objectives of the project were mutually linked and they supplemented each other.

Main activities:

1. Drama workshop programme
a. a series of workshops, 10 months - from September 2002 to June 2003.
b. integration meetings of all workshop participants.
c. the festival of workshop plays. The Third Festival of the Small and Big, which took place in "Dom Żołnierza" Military Centre of Culture on 13 June 2003.
d. presentation of workshop plays at schools and other educational centres. 30 performances together with integration meetings. April, May, June.
2. Popularisation programme of the actions for the underprivileged group.
a. publication and distribution of 4 issues of a brochure for teenagers (Issue 16,000 - 4x4000).
b. preparing and issuing a video tape as well as a DVD with instructions showing methods of drama workshops with dysfunctional groups. Production: October, November, December. Publication: December 2002.
c. 15 training sessions for teachers, therapists, counsellors and instructors presenting methods of using drama workshops in work with dysfunctional groups. Realization: December 2002 - September 2003.
d. current updating and expanding of the website of the Association, with thorough information concerning the implemented projects.
e. international conference :"What can be done to prevent social marginalizing of certain groups?" with partner organization and authorities in the fields of sociology, psychology, ethics, law, as well as local government and media. The conference took place on 14 June 2003.
3. English courses programme
a. a series of classes in workshop groups at three levels
b. a series of 10 theatrical integration meetings joining the educational programme with drama activities. From November 2002 to September 2003 (including summer holidays)
4. Keeping record of the activities:
a. recording the activities on video. Recording workshops, presentations for audience, training sessions, integration meetings
b. making a documentary concerning artistic activities of groups involved in the project. The completion of the production: September 2003.
c. photographic record. Using the photographs in subsequent issues of the brochure and on the websites.
5. Training for the Association leaders; Exchanging experience with partner organization.
a. 6-day-stay of 4 representatives of the Association in Vilnius. January 2003.
b. 6-day stay of the representatives of the partner organization and a group of young people from Vilnius in Bielsko-Biała.
